| The
problem stated:
Is there a way to prejudge the
sound of my voicing?
The Solution:
The precise contours of the tone
your voicing produces can only be heard when
you push the action back in the piano. You can, however, prejudge
that tone pretty well if you
pay close attention to the feel of the felt you're needling.
You need to establish a
relationship, so to speak, between yourself
and the resistance of the felt to your needle. You'll gain a very
good indication of what the hammers will sound like. First thing you
need to do is put away your three
needle tool, you may use it to spear lobster
meat out of a narrow claw but, never, for voicing. It's a lot
easier to feel the resistance of
needled felt using a single needle than three
or four needles.
We make and sell a tool that
holds a single needle.
Our tool is comfortable to hold and to push the needle without
straining your hands or wrists. Use a
#2 crewel needle (.050") and voice the first
hammer in a given section to your satisfaction. You may wish to
needle into the shoulder or into the
flat side of the hammer.
Next time I'll
discuss some of the pluses and minuses of lateral and radial needling.
Using a single needle will enable you to locate and soften precise
points or small areas of felt to achieve precise, quick and definite
results. Try it, you will save a lot of time, gain greater
control over the results and you'll
zero in on aspects of tone like unevenness
or sustain with amazing precision.
The important thing to remember
is: how the felt feels at the point of the needle as it pushes
into or through the hammer. While
every set of hammers is different and every
section of a given set may be different - you'll find that to end up
with a consistent tone within a given
section the felt will feel the same at
the point of the needle throughout the section with the notable
exception of the highest treble
section. Here, in the high treble there is a
definite graduation to a harder, more compressed feel as you move up
the scale. Your needling
technique will have to establish that graduation. |
